The Mistwood Experience
After a multi-million dollar renovation, Mistwood Golf Course has become one of the most talked about golf courses in Chicagoland. I recently visited Golf Magazine’s “Best New Course” with BiGG Jon Vic as we represented both BiGGs Golf Talk Radio and Golfballed.com at a special golf media day event.
The Mistwood Golf Course showcases 20 St. Andrew’s style bunkers and thrives to bring the feel of Scotland to the Midwest. As soon as you drive up to the gate you are greeted by an expanse of tree lined greens and a Scottish Style Clubhouse that will take your breath away. The course includes rolling hills, long and challenging fairways and lakes on all sides.
Although our media event day included the opportunity to play this beautiful course there was much more on the agenda. First off, was the performance center experience and lunch. The performance center experience was broken up into 3 separate groups where we learned about the history of Mistwood Golf Course and got to see first hand all that it has to offer. The tour exposed areas that the common person doesn’t get to experience as well as understanding why certain things are done as they are at Mistwood.

Next stop we received a #Wedgeducation from Callaway Golf. Here we were given insight into the mechanics and purposes behind the Callaway Wedges and then we were off to individual fittings to find the ideal club for our own personal game. I was fitted into the Mack Daddy Four with a matte black finish. This 58 degree loft club has 12 degrees of bounce and felt perfect in my hand. Chipping with the Mack Daddy Four allowed me to spin the ball extremely well. The reason I ended up with a 58 degree was because it made it easier for me to make my ball hop and stop where I needed. The experience of getting a custom fitting is one of the greatest parts of a professional team like Callaway. This allows the golfer to truly feel as if the club in their bag is made for them and for their individual game.
We were taught about the Toptracer system that will be installed into the dome so you can watch the path of your ball, monitor every shot, play other courses and learn more about your own personal game. This technology created a more individualized experience of both fun and function in your game. Here we were also able to visit the putting lab to see a variety of putters and learn about the technology used to improve and adjust your putter like that of the Sam Putt Lab Wireless Machine. Next stop… lunch and out to the course.
Once we had filled our stomachs, we were back outside to truly enjoy the course by playing a round of golf. The round was to be played as a shamble where BiGG Jon and I were paired with Dan the Man who was a teaching pro from the course. The fairways were incredibly long and challenging with bunkers and water hazards all around but the beautiful scenery takes all those negative thoughts out of your mind.
Throughout the course there are historical tidbits and Scottish legends like the one of ‘Kelpie’s Korner’ where the mythical creature of the lagoon lives and collects all the golf balls hit into his home.
An amazing experience was had at Mistwood but one day was not nearly enough to take it all in. The technology available at the course is truly incredible; from the Sam Putt Lab to the various items tested during your club fittings which takes nearly 3 hours. With the course yardage book in hand, I am excited to return for a day that is focused on golfing, my own personal fitting and being able to experience all the amenities that Mistwood has to offer like fine dining. I look forward to returning soon. In the meantime, we had the opportunity to interview Andrew Mickelson, Director of Golf at Mistwood Golf Club, on a most recent episode of BiGGs Golf Talk and you can hear for yourself what he had to share with us.
